The South
West Michigan Underwater Preserve
begins just north of Holland along the Lake Michigan shorelilne south to Bridgman, near the Indiana
border. The preserve extends from the shoreline to the 130 foot
depth, or five miles offshore, whichever is closer. The communities of New Buffalo, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, South Haven,
Douglas, Saugatuck and Holland are located adjacent to the preserve.
Presently nearly twenty sites have been located, some have been documented, in and near the preserve
including shipwrecks and geological formations, including the John Buttler Clay banks, underwater rock piles and piers.
Some of the more popular sites include the Rockaway,
Havana, Verano, North Shore Tug, the Ironsides, as well as deep wrecks such as the Michigan, Hennepen and Akeley.
