SWMUP Meeting notes
January 8, 2011 -- Meeting
called to order 10:15 am
Held
at Adventures in Diving & Travel, 661 Douglas Avenue, Holland MI 49423
In attendance: Gary Passon, Peggy Kurpinski, Crystal Falik, Mike Falik, Grant Jones, Ken
Fagerman, John from Capital City Scuba.
Non-profit status and Incorporation – in the process of being renewed – Peggy
is working with the necessary state and federal agencies to get current.
Bank balance –$1500, with a few outstanding expenses (MUPC dues for 2010 and 2011,
Dive Michigan T-shirts - $400)
Dive Michigan Shirts have arrived and are available for sale by mail or pick up for $25. They
have the Dive Michigan Globe with Michigan dive flag design on the back, and the full color SWMUP logo on the front.
SWMUP stickers – Gordon is
checking into pricing
Buoy
Permit Application repayment – one payment of $100 has been received, waiting for $400, Gary will check future payments.
Gary P. will follow up.
Website updates – Peggy is doing website updates, but Crystal will work on a redesigned website.
2011 goals -
Tri-fold up date and check into
printing at the Tech Center – Peggy is checking into pricing
Dives – Peggy & Gary
will talk to SWMUP about doing joint dives to document some of the local sites. Peggy has offered to teach
a U/W Archeology class, to teach divers interested in documenting the sites. This will NOT be a NAS class,
but will be either PADI or NAUI, depending on what the students wants. Cost of the class is estimated at
$100 to cover the costs of pool, printed materials, needed supplies, and open water dives.
Holland
Pier clean up is scheduled the second Saturday in May 21, 2011. Ken Fagerman is chair and can be contacted
at diverkf@aol.com or by phone at 616-557-3038.
Talked with WMUP committee and they are
interested in co-sponsoring dives & events.
Membership - $10 per person, per year, discounts on stuff at
local shops. Gordon is looking into medallions for “I support the Michigan Underwater Preserves 2011”
– to sell to divers to raise money.
MUPC membership – are we current with dues? We are now paid
for 2011 & 2012.
Shows & displays – on hold, but still a good idea. Check
on a portable display unit to share w/ WMUP.
Treasure Hunt at Moby’s – Date
has been tentatively set of Second Saturday of September 2011. Moby’s has it on
his schedule. Will need to form a committee to solicit prizes and promote this event.
Gary
Passon will chair buoy Committee. Previous volunteers have been Tim Marr, Kent VanKoevering, Gordon Chapman,
and the MUD Club from St. Joe area. Other volunteers include Ken Fagerman & Mike Falik.
Weights suggested include train wheels,
engine blocks, and concrete blocks. John Penn out of Whitehall has a hydraulic lift, and John from Capital
City has a deal on full and half sized concrete blocks. We need to find out weight, and cost.
Sink It Committee – Ken F. is still very interesting in sinking a ship; we need
to see if things have with the state have changed. Much discussion on the ideas of sinking a ship, how
to do it, and what needs to happen. Committee still things it would be a good idea.
